Chess Rules Draw Only King Left
Insufficient material to mate: These are draws by insufficient material:
No player can win because a King alone cannot "checkmate" the other King.
Here, white has an advantage (he has a knight and black has just his King alone), but unfortunately for white it is also not possible to win the game with a King and just a knight. This would also be impossible with King and bishop.
However it would be possible for white to checkmate (after a number of good moves) if he had just his King and a rook for example.
50 moves rule: A draw can also happen when 50 moves by each side have been played without any capture, pawn move or castling. In this case, any side can claim a draw. This rule prevents games in which no progress is being made from being continued forever.

Threefold repetition: Another rule designed to prevent games from going on forever is the threefold repetition rule. If the same POSITION occurs 3 times, with the same side to move, then any side can claim a draw (before or after playing its move). It is important to note that the moves leading to these repeated positions are irrelevant. What is relevant is the occurence of the same position, even if the moves played are different. The rule is not about repeating the moves, it's about repeating the positions. Also, the positions do not have to occur in sequence. A first occurence may happen at move 20, the other one at move 28 and the last one at move 45.

Stalemate: This is a stalemate:
White to move. He only has his King left. But he cannot move it because all the squares the King could move to are attacked by the black pieces (they are marked with red crosses).
However you notice that the white King is not currently attacked on its current square.
White cannot make any legal move but is not "in check". This is called a stalemate and the game is declared as a draw (which is unfortunate for black because he had otherwise a winning advantage).
